Pushkar
I was happy to get out of the big cities for a day and go to a sacred and holy place called Pushkar. It literally means "flower in hand."
It's a holy city because of many Hindi Temples there and a beautiful lake. There is no meat of any kind or booze in this town. All very sacred laws are observed. I stayed in a lovely place and went to have a real puja at the lake. I went on the back of a motorcycle with a young Hindi priest named Ganesh (no less) and we made prayers for health, wealth, and success for myself and my family and friends by throwing petals, rice and 2 powders into the lake. All bad Karma is done, only good Karma from now on!!! With one of the powders (the red one), he made another mark on my third eye. He also tied a string for protection around my right wrist. It was a beautiful ceremony.
We also visited the Temple of Brahma (holds the space for all creation), the only one in the world. Evidently as the story goes, his wife did not arrive on time to a ceremony he was creating. So he quickly took another wife, the famous Gayatri, in order to have the ceremony. His first wife was so mad, she cursed him into having only one place in the world where he could be honored rather than multiple temples. So, I visited this place. Very colorful and also sacred because together they hold all the space for creation. (FYI, some of you may have heard the Gayatri Mantra on the first Deva Premal CD.)
Then I went shopping in the markets of Pushkar. Funny how my guides think that shopping is going to a specific store and "getting it done." Very male persepective. I explained to them that shopping is an event all to itself that happens by looking at everything and then zeroing in on what I want to buy. So, after that Anil (my guide) and I went shopping in my paradigm.
It was a lot of fun and he actually got things for himself and his wife which he would not have done before when it was part of the job to get done.
I am back in Delhi now. Very cold. Great to see Shubh again and also to see David who returned from the States a day ago. Even though I think I got great prices on the things I bought, I can tell from their reactions even without them saying it outloud that I did not. But, heck if I care, anything here is better price than the same thing that would be three and four times more in the States. Plus what's traveling without shopping and bargaining? All part of the fun.
Tomorrow I'm off to the Tantric Temples of Kajuraho. Tantric Christmas. Yeah baby! And then after two days, the Shakti energy of Varanasi and the Ganges at sunset.
Many blessings for your holidays.
